Shellfish Aquaculture

The shellfish farming sector has experienced significant growth in the last few years and is poised to expand further with the establishment of new processing facilities in the region. One international seafood company has invested over a million dollars into operations in the Okeover Arm area, and is considering an even larger investment in the near future. The number of people employed by this sector is projected to double in the next five years.

In 2005, after extensive consultation with local shellfish producers, PRREDS produced a strategic plan for the growth of the industry. Click here to view the plan.

Marine Services

The Marine Services sector is also poised to grow thanks to the redevelopment of Westview Harbours and the proposed establishment of a Marine Business Park.

The creation of the Wharf at Westivew will allow for the development and attraction of businesses to service the increase in recreational vessel traffic to Powell River. An increase in visits is expected to result of an increase in moorage in South Harbour thanks to the reconfiguration of the breakwater.
The proposed Marine Business Park (to be located on 100 acres of land adjacent to Catalyst Paper's Mill site), has already drawn serious interest from marine services companies that would bring new industries and jobs to the community.
